India, a country about
one-third the size of the United States, is home to about 16% of
the world's population (over 1.07 billion). Great differences exist in this
country. About 83% of the people are Hindu, 11% Muslim, 3% nominal
Christians, 1% evangelicals, and 2% Sikhs. Hindi and English are
among 17 official languages. There are many other major language groups
with 1,658
total dialects. In two of India's 22 states laws have been passed
which forbid the conversion of people from their present religions.
Assembly workers have been in India since 1836. There are about
1,200 assemblies in India today, but in many cases missionaries are no
longer given visas for extended periods. The work continues in the
hands of capable national brethren.
