Madagascar, located off the east coast of southern Africa in the Indian Ocean, has a population of 17 million people that is predominantly of mixed Asian and African origin.  The official language is Malagasy, but French is also spoken.  Most Malagasys practice traditional religions, while 40% are nominally "Christian" and about 5% are Muslim.
